At the Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences, we are proud to have been part of the evolution of computing for almost 60 years. Starting in the earliest days of the field, our pioneering faculty made foundational contributions to the underpinnings and early applications of artificial intelligence, computing systems, theory, and networking.
Standing on the shoulders of these giants, we are proud today to be one of our nation’s leading programs in computing research, with faculty leading 40+ centers, institutes, and labs — many of them interdisciplinary — in all areas of the field.

Our 40+ research centers, institutes, and labs are conducting research in all areas of computer science, from theory and systems to digital civics and sustainable computing.
Many CICS undergraduate students take advantage of research opportunities acorss campus, gaining important experience to be applied in graduate school or in the marketplace.
In the spotlight
"I think the best way to learn is to apply the knowledge you gain in the classroom in real life, and research allows you to do that. For example, I took a course in statistics at UMass but never used what I learned until I started working in the lab. Now I feel much more comfortable using the statistical analysis methods I learned. This kind of real-world experience prepares me for my career in the future."
