Robert Sproull retired in 2011 as vice president and director of Oracle Labs, an applied research group that originated at Sun Microsystems (acquired by Oracle in 2010). Before joining Sun in 1990, he was a principal with Sutherland, Sproull and Associates; an associate professor at Carnegie Mellon University; and a research staff member at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center.

Sproull is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, where he has served as a member and chair of the Computer Science and Telecommunications Board. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He received MS and PhD degrees in computer science from Stanford University and an AB in physics from Harvard College.
