Joydeep Biswas

Ph.D., Robotics, Carnegie Mellon University (2014). M.S., Robotics, Carnegie Mellon University (2010). B.Tech., Engineering Physics, Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay (2008). In Spring of 2015, Joydeep was a post-doctoral fellow in the Computer Science Department at Carnegie Mellon University. In Fall of 2015, he joined the College of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst as an Assistant Professor.  In Fall of 2019, he joined the Computer Science Department, University of Texas at Austin.

My ultimate goal is to have self-sufficient autonomous mobile robots working in human environments, performing tasks accurately and robustly. In support of this goal, I am interested in research in perception, planning, and control applied to autonomous mobile robots. My research in perception involves developing models and representations for a dynamic world, and algorithms to build and perform inference based on such models. My interests in planning include motion planning, multi-robot coordination, and task-based planning in domains including service mobile robots, and robot soccer.

Professor Biswas' research on autonomous service mobile robots and robot soccer has been covered by several media and news articles. As a PhD student he was the recipient of the 2015 Siebel Scholarship. He has served on the Program Committee for the RoboCup Symposium, and continues to serve on the Executive Committee of the RoboCup Small Size League.
