Robert Moll's primary research area is interactive web-based education. He is currently principal investigator on a grant from the U.S. Department of Education titled Building a Java Instructor Community: An Online Plan for Improving Introductory Computer Science Teaching and Learning. Moll also has a continuing interest in AI methods applied to combinatorial optimization.

Moll joined the faculty of the Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences (CICS) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 1973. Previously, he has served as the computer science department's Associate Chair for Academic Programs. He was a 2005-2006 recipient of the College of Natural Science and Mathematics' Outstanding Faculty Service Award.
