About

Professor Subhransu Maji's research spans computer vision and machine learning. He is interested in building AI systems with rich visual reasoning capabilities enabling a wide range of applications. His research includes developing architectures for visual understanding that are robust, efficient, and have the ability to learn from a few examples. His research is also interdisciplinary where he develops novel computer vision algorithms for problems in ecology and astronomy.

Maji spent 2012-2014 as a research assistant professor at Toyota Technological Institute at Chicago, a philanthropically endowed computer science institute at the University of Chicago campus. In Fall 2014, he joined the Manning College of Information and Computer Sciences at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst as an assistant professor.

Maji was awarded the Google graduate fellowship during his PhD in 2008. He won the medal for graduating on top of the computer science department of IIT Kanpur in 2006. For his work he has received the best paper award at WACV 2015, the best paper honorable mention at CVPR 2018, and the National Science Foundation CAREER award in 2018. His research is supported by the National Science Foundation, as well as faculty grants from Facebook, NVIDIA, and Adobe. He is an associate editor of IJCV and regularly serves on the program committees of leading computer vision and machine learning conferences. He is also a part-time Amazon scholar, and in the past has enjoyed working at Google, INRIA, Microsoft Research, the CLSP center at JHU, and Oxford University.
