The UMass BioNLP Lab invites you to our Independent Study (COMPSCI 696) Research Workshop! Join us as our talented IS students present their semester-long research projects, showcasing the intersection of natural language processing (NLP) and healthcare.

About

We are a group of researchers passionate about applying NLP to solve complex problems in healthcare. Together with our PhD students and Prof. Hong Yu, many of our IS participants have recently published in AI/NLP conferences like ACL, EMNLP, NAACL, and NeurIPS.

Presentation topics

Here’s a glimpse of the exciting research projects you’ll hear about:

  • Scaling Test-Time Computation in Medical QA with Scalable Retrieval and
    Agentic Reasoning
  • Synthetic Dataset for Eviction Status Identification from Electronic Health
    Records
  • Self-Rewarding Strategies for LLMs
  • Medical LLM Reasoning with Rule-Based RAG
  • AI-Driven Hospital System Simulation
  • Robust LLMs for Out-of-Distribution Medical NLP
  • Step-by-Step Verification for LLM Clinical Reasoning
  • And more!

After the presentations, we’ll host a Q&A and networking session with current PhD students and Prof. Hong Yu (PI of our lab). If you’re curious about IS research opportunities for Spring 2025, this is a great chance to learn more!
