Abstract

This presentation introduces students to the first steps for telling an ethical story about a dataset using various rhetorical strategies. After introducing students to seven common data story structures, I ask them to perform simple exploratory data analysis on a specific dataset using a combination of reflective writing, class discussion, and curated examples, the presentation gives students the tools to begin telling a clear and responsible data story and to understand the harmful impacts of unethical and misleading data stories.
